The Alminco Scorpion Crawler Rig is an air over hydraulic, track mounted drill rig used for the installation of secondary roof and rib support in underground roadways.
The Scorpion is incredibly compact, giving it excellent manoeuvrability. Capable of roof and rib-bolting in working heights of 1.4 m and above, it also has the ability to work alongside a belt due to its slight width.
The functional and ergonomic design reduces costs and increases productivity. Using the best available components, Alminco has reduced machine downtime and dramatically extended the life of the Scorpion. The Scorpion consists of an integral hydraulic tank and chassis based around a pair of fork pockets, which are used for transportation of the machine around a mine site. The combined tank/chassis provides excellent rigidity and strength for the mounting of the tracks and boom. Positioned at the end of the boom is a hydraulic drill mast. The mast supplied can be a Joy HFX or ARO Series 2500 type, depending on roof height.
Boom motion is controlled by the linear actuation of two hydraulic cylinders which allow it to swing left and right, as well as up and down. Controlling mast motion is two rotary actuators, allowing the mast to rotate from roof to rib to floor as well as toward and away from the face.
Providing power to the hydraulic pump is a radial piston air motor. Capable of producing in excess of 14kW it allows hydraulic supply pressure to exceed 3000 psi where needed. Air is fed to the machine via a two inch bull hose whereby the machine works at its peak performance at 550 kPa (80 psi) and 140 L/s (300 cfm). Even at 400 kPa (60 psi) however, the Scorpion will tram and drill satisfactorily.
All operations of the Scorpion are controlled via a valvebank located at the back of the machine. This allows the operator to be safely out of the way when tramming. A tramming/bolting control is used to securely isolate one function from the other, maximising operator safety when bolting also. MDG35.1 compliant handles give the operator further aid to control the machine safely. Compliance to MDG41 ensures that all fluid power components are fit for purpose.
Operator built, the Scorpion has all operational issues covered. As such, the machine incorporates large storage areas which can hold roofbolts, rib-bolts and drill steels. As well as chemical anchors, plates and dollies. The Scorpion also has a vice and washdown hose so that it is a complete stand-alone unit. The Scorpion also has a list of options. Along with varying type and size of drill mast, other options include a walkover work platform designed to AS1657 and others, which are currently in development. |
